Alpinia purpurata - Red Cone Ginger

It is used as an ornamental foliage plant (to 10 feet) and produces excellent, long-lasting cut flowers all year long. Fast growing. Does not go dormant in the winter. Low salt/medium drought tolerance. Zones10-11

Costus curvibracteatus 'Green Mountain'

Newly available is this dwarf (to 3.5 feet) Costus with abundant orange-red inflorescences. Flowers on and off during the warm months. Native to Panama. Good plant for shady areas. Zones 10-11.

 

 

 

 Alpinia zerumbet - Shell Ginger

This plant can get quite large, 10 feet or so, and is grown for foliage and for the flowers - both of which are used in arrangements. The flowers are unusual in the extreme. The unopened flowers look like strands of threaded pink seashells. When they open, the seem to contain tiny orchids with yellow and orange markings. Quite an impressive plant, all-in-all. One of the first gingers to bloom in the spring. Zones 7b-11. Green-leaf and variegated varieties available.

The floral cone starts out green with tiny yellow flowers, then turns a most startling crimson. It will last for a week or more as a cut flower. It may be grown in full sun, but prefers partial shade. It is dormant during the winter. Height is 3 to 5 feet. The cone retains quantities of water which becomes very fragrant and, when squeezed out, can be used as a shampoo (really). Zones 8-11.

 

 

Costus speciosus variegata - Variegated Crepe Ginger

A variegated dwarf (4’) cultivar from Tropical Asia. Very attractive striped foliage with a pronounced spiral form and maroon stems. Sometimes dormant during the winter. Hardy to zone 8.

 

 

 

Costus spiralis - Spiral Flag ginger

Fast growing herbaceous perennial to 6 feet with spiraling stems.  Flowers are red-orange and appear in summer and fall.  Medium salt tolerance and medium drought tolerance. Likes part shade.  From northern South America.  Does not go dormant in the winter here in Miami. Zones 10A-11

 

 

 

 

 

 

Costus speciosus - Crepe Ginger

A lovely ginger to 6 feet tall from Tropical Asia. The 3 inch flowers look like crepe paper and range from light pink to white. Very attractive spiral foliage  Sometimes dormant during the winter months. Hardy to zone 8.

 

 

 

 

 

Costus woodsonii - Red Button Costus

Flaming red flowers appear almost year-round on this dwarf ginger, which grows to only about 4 feet. This perennial is a good border plant for shady areas. Needs regular watering. Zones 10-11
