These denizens of the rainforest floor love shade and make excellent house and conservatory plants.

Eucharis x grandifloraEucharis x grandiflora - Amazon Lily

This is a natural hybrid originating in Columbia.  It is a shade-loving bog plant with wonderfully scented white blooms on tall stems appearing in the spring and summer. The dark green leaves appear from the underground bulbs. Height to about 2 feet.  Zones 10-12

Alocasia spp. - Elephant's Ear

Various large-leafed, very tropical-looking plants from SE Asia. Will grow in full sun and in fairly heavy shade. Most work well in very wet environments, though they don't require large amounts of water to thrive.

Anthurium sp. - Birdsnest Anthurium

This plant is generally referred to as A. hookeri, but, as ours grow to 5 feet or more, it might be A. salviniae. It forms a majestic cluster of huge and very tropical-looking leaves. It is a very tough plant, but does not like a light level stronger than about 30% shade. Few tropicals set off a small, shaded water garden area like a mature Birdsnest Anthurium.

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius - Voodoo Lily

Either an attractive speckled trunk or a very weird, huge flower will greet you in the spring as the Voodoo Lily shakes off its winter dormancy. Tall, primeval-looking, symetrical stalks will grow to six feet tall in a mature plant. A close relative to the Giant Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), this exotic aroid is much easier to grow. The edible corm may be left in the ground during the dry season. From southeast Asia.

Monstera deliciosa - Ceriman, Swiss Cheese PlantMonstera deliciosa flower

A huge-leafed vine-like climber from Mexico which produces a tasty edible fruit reminiscent of pineapple. (Ask us how to tell when they are ripe.) The plants in the photo are growing in full sun, but they really prefer shade. They will form a shrub-like mound or climb right of the side of a tree. The enclosed "Swiss Cheese" perforations on the leaf are the best indication to differentiate from the Philodendron, which some garden centers try to pass off as Monstera. Available as a three foot, prepared cutting only.

Alocasia plumbeaAlocasia plumbea  [Indica Metallica]

Can be grown as an aquatic. This aroid has huge, attractively-veined leaves, especially during the summer months. Fast-growing to six feet.

Xanthosoma sp. - Giant Elephant Ear

This large elephant ear reaches 6-7 feet and has a white spathiphyllum-type flower.  Needs water and part to dappled shade.  Does very well by a pond. Zones 10-11

Cyathea cooperi - Australian Tree Fern

A native of eastern Australia, this tree fern attains 40 feet in its area of origin, but usually around 10 feet in cultivation here in south Florida. It likes partial to full shade and high humidity. Works very well planted next to a water garden. Low drought/ low salt tolerance. Zones 10-11
